This is one of the best available GLQuake engine modifications. The list of supported effects is very impressive, including dynamic shadows, high-resolution textures support, improved lighting model, particle system effects (smoke, blood), model frames interpolation, stainmaps, improved sky rendering and others.
It doesn't only provide the graphic improvements, but also has one of the most advanced network game features.

Installation instructions:

Ensure to apply the VIS patch to your version of Quake to make the water transparent.
Download and unpack 'darkplacesengine20090128.zip' to the original game's directory (this was 'E:\games\quake' in my case).
Run 'darkplaces.exe' to start the game.
Open 'Options'->'Change Video Mode'. Set an appropriate video mode and adjust 'Anisotropic Filtering' to the maximum supported by your hardware. Click 'Apply'.
Open 'Options'->'Custom brightness'. Adjust the 'Gamma' parameter until the dithered pattern in the center of each square becomes hardly distinguishable.
Return to 'Options'. Click 'Effects: High' to set high-quality effects preset for the graphics. Select 'Lighting: full' to load the best-quality preset for the lighting.
Open 'Options'->'Customize effects'. Set 'Particles Quality' to maximum value, set 'Water Alpha (opacity)' to '0.800', set 'Water Movement' to '1.500'.
Open 'Options'->'Customize lighting'. Set 'Bloom Color Scale' to '1', 'Bloom Color Subtract' to '0.063' and 'Bloom resolution' to '512'.

this is a nice port. and IT HAS advanced effects and stuff. only the poor performance with full dynamic lighting/shadows is a bit annoying (runs perfect with just dynamic shadows etc. enabled for models). I use it with rygels texture pack and pretty shader water mod. really cool.
