Berserker@Q2 is the most technically advanced source port for the Quake 2. This is surely the best-looking Quake 2 port ever available, with its high realistic water, smoke, object shadows, lens flares, glasses, all kinds of texture effects, ranging from the microbumpmapping on weapons to the parallax-mapping reliefs. Shiny surfaces, realistic blood and wall decals - there are surely no concurents to this one.
This is a short (and not full) list of supported graphical features, mostly taken from original notes:

- Parallax
- Vertex buffer objects (VBO)
- Vertex and fragment programs

On practice this results in high-realistic graphics comparable to the modern games like Doom3 or Quake4. The support of in-game flashlight makes this comparison even more close, but in the same time this is still Quake 2 with its unique style and gameplay.

Installation instructions (deprecated, need update for version 1.2):
- Start installation by running 'Setup.exe'. The installation procedure is mostly standard, so there shouldn't be any difficulties with it.
- When the setup asks you for the Quake 2 directory, point to the original's game folder (this was 'E:\Games\Quake II' in my example)
- When the setup is finished, unpack "up109to111.rar" file to the installation directory overwriting the files.
- Unpack "up111to112.rar" file to the installation directory overwriting the files.
- Unpack "up112to113.rar" file to the installation directory overwriting the files.
- Start 'Berserker.exe' from the folder you've selected during the installation.
- Open 'Video Options' from the main menu. Select an appropriate 'Video Mode' and ensure to adjust the 'H/W brightness', 'H/W gamma' and 'H/W contrast', because the original settings didn't provide a very realistic and atmospheric look. You can also turn off 'Tex. compression' and 'Bump compression' as they can give a visual artefacts on low-resolution textures like sky.

They are cumulative, so they must be installed in order. Setup.exe installs version 102, so install up102to103.rar, then up103to104.rar, and so on. Just extract the contents of the RAR archive over the top of whatever is in your Berserker@Quake2 directory.
One more thing, Setup.exe first asks where you want to install Berserker@Quake2 (your choice) then asks where to find the Quake 2 directory. Normally you wouldn't use the same directory.

I'm having trouble installing Berserker. After I do a fresh Quake 2 install from the old disk, I install berserker in the same directory. Quake 2 runs fine by itself, and Berserker even starts up fine. But as soon as I attempt to play single player, it opens the console with an error that reads "couldn't load base1.bps"
Any suggestions? I've looked all over the net for answers, but the guides on berserker are rare and certainly not helpful. If you could provide a more in-depth installation guide or something more current, I would greatly appreciate it

That sounds strange for me. I'll try this by myself once more using the latest version of the Berserker@Q2 and if it doesn't help, I'll try to ask at the official forum.

http://icculus.org/pipermail/quake2/2002-October/000593.html - I've found an advice to remove all pak files from baseq2 directory except the pak0.pak. I'm not sure if it helps, but it's surely worth a try.
If you install the game directly from the CD, make sure to install the latest official game patch (v 3.20 if I'm correct)

Hello! This port is just awesome! But i have serious trouble running it under windows 7 pro 32bit. I have a 1Gb Radeon HD5770 card and latest vga drivers installed. But after launching the game during several seconds the screen just freezes (picture and sound). It begins to flick and drop me out to windows desktop. Task manager shows that "Berserker.exe" not responding. Maybe the game has some compatibility issues with windows 7?

you mean, that q2bers is working fine with this driver? what is your PC config (OS+vga)? i'v seen some gameplay movies on youtube, but they all run on nVidia cards. so i think, the port is much better optimized for nVidia GPU-s. and that is so sad...
